The 24-Character System Known as Elder Futhark

Runes used for divination belong to the 24-character system called Elder Futhark. They are divided into three groups (ætts) of eight characters each, each responsible for themes such as daily life, nature, and human nature.

Originally, each character referred to concrete objects such as property, cattle, ice, and the sun, from which their symbolic meanings have expanded.

Key Runes and Their Meanings

Memorizing the meanings of commonly drawn runes will help you conduct readings more quickly.

The three-rune draw is the easiest to use

Draw three runes from a bag and arrange them from left to right as past, present, and future. This alone creates a coherent, flowing reading.

If you need a quick answer, you can also draw just one rune. In this case, interpret the result based on whether the rune has a "yes" or "wait" nature. If Isa or Nauthiz appears, it means now is not the time to act.

Rune Drawing Procedure

The basic method for drawing runes is to feel for stones placed in a bag. If you do not have a dedicated bag, a cloth drawstring pouch will suffice.

Clarify your question in your mind before putting your hand into the bag. Lift out the stone that your fingertips touch first and place it on a cloth. If drawing multiple runes, pull them one by one and arrange them from left to right in order.

The most important thing is to put your question into words before drawing. If you draw with a vague question, you will not know how to interpret the resulting runes. Frame your question so that you can imagine the form of the answer, such as "Should I continue my current job?"

Distinguishing Between Runes and Tarot

Both runes and tarot are divination methods where you draw results on the spot to get answers, but they have different areas of expertise.

Tarot has 78 cards and can depict situations in detail. It is suitable for sorting out complicated interpersonal relationships or problems involving multiple factors. Runes, on the other hand, have only 24 characters and return concise answers.

Runes are better suited for binary decisions such as "Should I move forward or stop?" This is because they provide clear guidance, such as indicating that now is not the time to act if Isa or Nauthiz appears.

Use tarot if your dilemma is complex, and runes if you want a one-word answer. Remembering this distinction will help you avoid hesitation when choosing a tool.

Rune Care and Storage

Runes are often made of stone or wood, and are handled with the hands. As hand oil can build up with use, it is recommended to wipe them occasionally with a dry cloth.

It is common practice to store runes in a dedicated bag in a dark place. Many readers make a habit of not leaving them out in plain sight.

Some people make their own runes. Carving the characters into wood chips or stones by hand allows you to memorize each meaning while working, making it an effective learning method. There is no need to use store-bought ones.

The Classification of the Three Ætts

The 24 runes are divided into three groups of eight characters each. These are called ætts, and each has its own domain of responsibility.

The first ætt consists of runes related to daily life and material matters, covering topics directly tied to everyday life such as property, livestock, travel, and gifts.

The second ætt deals with natural forces and trials. It gathers harsh runes such as disruption, scarcity, and stagnation, and is considered the group that indicates unavoidable events. The third ætt covers human nature and spiritual maturity, with themes such as justice, growth, and self-awareness.

Checking which ætt a drawn rune belongs to will help you understand which layer its answer refers to: is it about daily life, unavoidable circumstances, or the inner self? This distinction deepens your reading.

When Runes Do Not Yield an Answer

There may be times when the meaning of a drawn rune simply does not connect to your question. In most cases, this is due to how the question was framed.

Runes will not give clear answers to vague questions such as "Will I be happy?" As a divination method that answers with a limited vocabulary of 24 characters, you need to narrow down your question.

Another cause is when you already have an answer but are unwilling to accept it. If runes repeatedly show Isa or Nauthiz, i.e., stagnation or scarcity, that is the answer: now is not the time to act. Accepting this indication will get you further faster than redrawing runes to seek a different answer.
